Baritone Michael J. Hawk is a Resident Artist with the Seattle Opera for the inagural season of this position: this season, he will cover Donner in Das Rheingold, Melisso in Alcina and the title role in Barber of Seville. He will also sing the role of Fiorello in the Barber of Seville. This summer, Michael will sing Guglielmo in Così fan tutte and Big Jule in Guys and Dolls at Opera Saratoga.
He is also a graduate of the Los Angeles Opera’s Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program. During the 2021-2022 season at LA Opera, he sang the Bass Soloist in the St. Matthew Passion in a co-production with the Hamburg Ballet and covered Dandini in La Cenerentola and Wolfram in Tannhäuser. Summer of 2022, he sang Ford in Verdi's Falstaff (opposite Sir Bryn Terfel as the title role) and the title role in Don Giovanni with the Aspen Opera Theater.
During the 2020-2021 season, he sang Ophémon in Joseph Bologne's L'amant Anonyme at LA Opera and Demetrius in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream with the Santa Fe Opera. During the 2019-2020 season at LA Opera, he sang Schaunard in La bohème, Der Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte, and Sir Walter Raleigh in Roberto Devereux. In the 2018-2019 season, Michael sang the title role in the world premiere of Henry Mollicone’s Moses, under the baton of Maestro James Conlon, and Caireles in El gato montés with LA Opera; in June 2019, he made his role debut as Escamillo in Carmen with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra; he then joined the Bard Summerscape and Music Festival as Der fünfte Richter in the U.S. Premier of Korngold’s immense Das Wunder der Heliane and the Baritone Soloist in Zemlinsky’s Lyrische Symphonie. In the summer of 2017, Michael was the Cobbler in Philip Glass's The Juniper Tree at Wolf Trap Opera. In 2018, he was a finalist in Houston Grand Opera's Concert of Arias, and in the summer of 2018, he joined the Apprentice Singer Program at Santa Fe Opera, where he covered the title role of Oppenheimer in a new production of Doctor Atomic, directed by the librettist Peter Sellars. Michael made his LA Opera debut as Prince Arjuna in Satyagraha in October of 2018.
During the 2022-2023 season, he will be singing Papageno in W.A. Mozart's The Magic Flute with the Bufallo Philharmonic (under the baton of Grammy Award winning Maestra JoAnn Falletta) and return to his alma mater as a guest artist singing Dr. Buchanan in Lee Hoiby's Summer and Smoke with the Hillman Opera. Michael will also sing a recital featuring the music of Johnathan Dove with pianist Sandra Leary at the Rosch Recital Hall.
